Abductive reasoning infers the most likely cause of what you observe — the logic of detectives and diagnosis. It does not prove; it ranks explanations by how well they fit, favouring the simplest that works.

Required versus enough
Oxygen is necessary for fire but not sufficient — you also need fuel and heat. Confusing what is required with what is enough breaks countless plans and arguments. Clear thinkers separate the two.
Correlation vs Causation
Moving together isn't causing
When two things rise together, four stories fit: A causes B, B causes A, a hidden C drives both, or pure coincidence. The correlation alone cannot tell you which — only further evidence can.
Formal Fallacies
Broken by structure
Some arguments fail by their very shape, regardless of content. Affirming the consequent — 'if rain then wet; it's wet, so it rained' — ignores the sprinkler. The form itself is invalid.
Informal Fallacies
Broken by content
Informal fallacies persuade while dodging the argument: attacking the person, appealing to popularity, building a strawman, sliding down a slippery slope. Naming the move strips its power.
Falsifiability
What could prove it wrong
Popper's razor: a claim that no possible evidence could refute explains nothing. Real theories make risky predictions that could fail. If nothing would change your mind, you hold a belief, not a hypothesis.
The Burden of Proof
Who must show their work
